Mission Statement
Finding the Missing

The Kristen FoundationThe Kristen Foundation is a National non-profit Foundation for Missing Adults named after Kristen Modafferi, a Park Scholar at NC State University and Charlotte resident, who disappeared on June 23, 1997 without a trace while working and studying in San Francisco, CA. Due to the mysterious circumstances of Kristen's disappearance, law enforcement authorities classified her as an endangered/at-risk adult.

At the time of her disappearance Kristen was only 3 weeks past her 18th birthday. During the search for their daughter, the Modafferi's discovered that there were no federal or state funds available to assist in the search for Kristen as she was considered an adult and not eligible for funds from NCMEC. To assist the families of missing adults local communities can run silent auctions, raffles, bake sales, etc. All noble efforts but singular events.

Joan Scanlon-Petruski, a neighbor of the Modafferi's, thought there had to be a more sustaining way to raise assistance funds for families like the Modafferi's . Her idea was to create an affordable Community Cookbook, one filled with favorite family recipes that were easy to follow and enjoyable to make. With the wonderful contributions of many Charlotteans and friends, the "For the Love of a Child" cookbook was published in December of 1999. To date over 3,000 copies have been sold in over 20 states, raising over $100,000.00 to help families in the search for missing and endangered adults.

In December, 2000, the Kristen Foundation was established as a state and federally recognized not-for-profit charitable organization to assist the families of missing and endangered adults. In March of 2001, The First Annual Crystal Ball and Silent Auction to benefit the Foundation was held at the Adams Mark Hotel in Charlotte, NC. The event raised over $12,000.00 for the Foundation. To date, the Kristen Foundation has been able to provide emotional support and assistance to over one hundred families in their search for their missing and endangered young adults.
